Jasper Johns: Regrets at The Courtauld Gallery, London, from September 12 to December 14, 2014
Regrets is a haunting series of ten paintings and drawings inspired by a photograph of Lucian Freud posing in Francis Bacon’s London studio.
Johns transformed the image by copying, mirroring and doubling it. Unexpectedly, the form of a skull emerged in his new composition, like an apparition.
Johns and reworked the subject in a variety of media, creating works that can be experienced as a profound meditation on mortality, creativity and memory.
This exhibition is based upon one originally organised by The Museum of Modern Art, New York
